Haywood NC Real Estate Information
Haywood County is located in Western North Carolina (NC) between Buncombe County and the Tennessee border and was formed around 1810. Haywood NC was named for John Haywood, the NC treasurer for 40 years starting in 1787. Soldiers passing through during the American Revolution became some of the earliest settlers. Haywood County is a beautiful location known for its mountain peaks including 18 of which are over 6000 feet elevation. This is the largest number of peaks this high for any county located to the east of the Mississippi.
North Carolina (NC) General Assembly divided this area in 1869, into six precincts which are now known as townships. These original townships were Beaverdam, Cataloochee, Crabtree, Fines Creek, Pigeon, and Waynesville. Population increasing in Haywood County resulted in additional townships being added. Today the four largest cities in Haywood County NC are Canton, Clyde, Maggie Valley, and Waynesville.
Rick's Raid one of the last civil war battles was fought in Haywood in 1865. Pressley Sapphire Mine where the "Southern Star" was found is located in Haywood County. (Southern Star is the world's largest blue sapphires. The state dog for NC, Plott Hound, has been bred in Haywood NC since the 18th century. Folkmoot USA, an International Folk Festival is the largest is the largest of its kind and is held in Waynesville NC each summer. Lake Junaluska has been a religious retreat and vacation resort has been a vacation resort and religious retreat for hundreds of thousands of visitors is also located in Haywood County. Haywood NC is part of the National Forest Scenic Byway including Pisgah National Forest.

Haywood County's temperatures vary with elevation although the average is 54 degrees which includes an average of 38 degrees in January to 71 degrees in June. Haywood NC averages 48 inches of rain and 12 inches of snow each year. The seasons for Haywood are uniquely special with fall being the most popular for tourism as the visitors come to enjoy the beauty of the color changes for leaves.
