Canton NC is located in the beautiful mountains of Western North Carolina. The area which was originally part of Cherokee Indian Territory has grown to be the second largest city in Haywood County. Canton North Carolina was founded in 1889 and was known at the time as Buford and later renamed as Pigeon Ford in 1891. Canton's current name was given in 1893. Canton, NC was named after Canton, Ohio who had supplied the steel for the bridge over the Pigeon River.

Canton, NC is situated along the banks of the Pigeon River and near five beautiful mountains (including famous Cold Mountain). Haywood County's seat Waynesville NC is to the west and the Buncombe County seat Asheville is about thirteen miles to the east. Clyde, Bethel, West Canton, and Candler are also nearby smaller communities. Western North Carolina's climate is moderate and has four distinct seasons making Canton NC a very desirable place to call home. This small residential community with tree lined streets is convenient to Asheville Regional Airport.

Blue Ridge Papers, Inc. is located in Canton NC and is also Haywood County largest industry. The mill produces paper and allied products. Two industrial parks are located just north of Canton NC.

Canton North Carolina offers a recreation program as a service to the local residents and their guest. Canton Recreation Park has a playground, tennis courts, swimming pool, picnic tables, and baseball fields. Residents enjoy "Pickin in the Park" during summer, walking trail around the park, Labor Day celebration, and during the holiday season the lighted Christmas parade and festival of lights.

Canton NC population from the 2000 census was 4,029 people including 1,819 households, of which were 1,118 families. This included about about 20% with someone over 65 and a median income at the time was $28,775 with $38,191 for the median income for families.

Canton NC popularity is also the result of the access to several fine golf courses including Springdale Country Club's eighteen hole course. Nature Trails with hiking, fishing for trout and bass, and visiting nearby National Forest add to the benefits of living in this location. Great Smoky Mountain National Park and Blue Ridge Parkway are also close to Canton NC. Cold Mountain NC, the now legendary location is nearby along with the Maggie Valley area known for mountain living, shopping, and skiers.
